Nearing 500.....

So, it just occurred to me earlier today, that I have almost run 500 miles this year. (461.7 is the official count) I have a long run planned for Sunday, so by then it will even be less. 500 miles....from my door I can go all the way past Ottowa! Though it has taken me considerably more time then it would have if I just drove there.

Doing a little math, I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to accomplish this, so the real question is, after I run 500 miles in 2009 what do I do? How do I celebrate something that I never thought I would even attempt to do? Should I eat 500 cupcakes? Should I drink 500 beers? Should I buy $500 worth of new sneakers and running apparel?? (Okay, that may sound like the best option but still has it's own flaws...) Maybe treat myself to a nice massage, and take pride in the fact that I have done so, so many things this year that I never thought were possible. Two half marathons...two half-centuries on a mountain bike...taking Bikram yoga! I'm not sure now how all of these events will shape me next year, or the year after, but I know that the effect they've had has been positive.

2010..already in sight

I've been thinking about this a lot today, mainly because a runner friend of mine asked me what my next race was. It also made me reflect a bit on where I came from in my running.

Today I ran the Nike Human Race in prospect park, which was a 10K. This is the last race I have signed up for--I may do a turkey trot on Thanksgiving day, or I may not. In a way it's nice to think that I just have the rest of the year to run however far I want to. But, this friend asked me, "What races do you have lined up for next year?" And I just looked at him kind of dumbfounded and replied that I had no idea! The notion of planning races that far ahead is kind of a new notion to me--something that really only has to be done with half marathons and marathons. I don't think 2011 will hold a marathon in store for me. I'm not sure mentally I am ready to handle it. I think right now my best goal would be to run 9 NYRR races and volunteer one race--giving me an automatic spot into the 2011 NYC Marathon. I will be 26 in Nov. 2012. For some reason that is terrifying. I know I want to work on speed this winter, and for me the treadmill is the perfect way to do so.

Do I want to do any Tri's next year? Will I even have time to do any other races if I'm doing 9 + 1? Will I have the energy is really the question! I don't want to drive myself crazy though, which is pretty easy to do. If I don't run the 9--for whatever reason, oh well.

I can't believe this year is almost over. Even more amazing is that February 21st was my very first race, a simple 5k, and this year I've run two half marathons. It's still hard for me to comprehend.

NYC Half Marathon

Wow. That's about all I have to say. Woke up at 3:10am, saw a guy get the crap beaten out of him on the 6 train(!!!), met up with the SUPER sweet Lynda, and ran an amazing race. I gave it 100% effort, and set a PR by 1 minute! I really thought that waking up so early with only 4 or 5 hours of sleep was going to be a major factor, but I don't think it mattered at all.

Miles 1-3 were really a warm up for me, but my legs felt really, really fresh and ready to go. I'll ignore the fact that there was NO water at mile 1.5, because I had brought my own bottle, which was awesome to have/refill during the race. I felt pretty great 4-6, I killed those hills and made them my bitch! Took a GU at 4.5. Between 6 - 8 I was starting to feel sore. I was wearing one of those knee straps for "jumpers knee" and honestly, my knee didn't hurt for one second during the race. But my hamstrings were starting to get sore, and the arches of my feet were starting to hurt.

Finally, out of the park, running down 7th ave I got a huge energy burst. I'm sure also knowing that I was halfway done was a nice incentive! Running through Times Square was great, and the crowd was really great too. We turned down 44th I think, and the whole way down to the west side was downhill!!! After running through all those hills in the park I felt like I was flying. I took another GU (with caffeine) at 8.5. I actually felt great until 11 or so...my hamstrings were really tight, and I kept trying to tell myself to ignore the discomfort, ignore the pain....there's nothing wrong you just need to keep pushing and keep going. At a few points around this time I saw people sidelined with pain, and actually screaming in agony. It was definitely sobering to see, but made me appreciate how I was doing even more. I think also around 11.5 I realized I'm done with Halfs for a little while...I think for me it's really a great distance to race, but after racing two in just over two months....I'm done...for now.

I definitely took walking breaks, but they were limited to 60-90 seconds, and I actually stopped around 11 to stretch my legs, and walked around 12.5 for a minute because I was pushing that last mile really hard. (According to my Garmin I ran mile 13 in 10:13, but it also claims I ran the half in 2:24)

When I was close enough to see the clock I was within (what I thought) seconds of making/breaking my goal of beating my BK Half time...The clock said 2:36:-- and I knew we had started at least 10:30, so some quick math said I needed to get my ass over that finish line FAST..and if my math is correct, if I complete the last .7 mile in 7:04, which means I averaged a 10:05 min/mile, so clearly I had some gas in reserve, and I was going to take that PR.

So, I gave it 100%, and I am really happy. Don't get me wrong, I did have some tough moments towards the end of the race, but overall, I felt really great and really prepared mentally and physically.

Thank you so much for all your well wishes, it means a lot!

Splits!
5K - 0:34:55
10K - 1:09:19 (+34:24)
15K - 1:44:02 (+34:43)
20K - 2:18:17 (+32:15) (Woah!!)
13.1 - 2:25:21 (+07:04)

PACE - 11:06

I also got my first medal today!! So amazing.

Half Aftermath

Okay, so I know after all that's said and done, the Brooklyn Half Marathon was over a week ago. Most bloggers are DONE talking about it (okay, except for Ted who was a little behind!) but I cannot stop thinking about it. I still cannot believe that I finished.

There is some part of me that wants to discredit this accomplishment, and turn it into something that's not mine. Like, for example "You can't be proud of this accomplishment because you only ran 6 miles and then you took the train home." NOT TRUE! Or, ""You can't be proud of this accomplishment because you walked parts of it" But that's not even valid. I ran 13.1 miles in under two and a half hours, and a year ago I was just getting my first pair of running sneakers and could barely run for 30 minutes. Running the BK Half was part of my New Years Resolution. This is how crazy this all is for me, and one week later I still cannot comprehend.

And on top of this all, I have the most amazing, supportive boyfriend, that manages to make me feel loved and motivated even when we are 894 miles away.

Yearly migration

I have been terrible at keeping a blog, haven't I? I guess with twitter, dailymile, and facebook there's rarely ever I time when I have a lot of (cohesive!) thoughts to write down at once.

I can't believe I'm going to type this out, but I am actually looking forward to flying down south for the 4th of July. Normally flying instills a type of sweaty trepidation in me, but for some reason, I'm actually really excited. It's been a year since I've been down to visit Ken's family, and I'm just looking forward to a relaxing VACATION. And I will not be in NYC for a few days! Yay! Get out of the city! We don't really have anything major planned. May go shooting at the gun range, may go bowling, heck, I may even TRY to sneak in a run :) And if we're even feeling monetarily inclined, might even get another tattoo!

Seriously, I'm excited to see my guy, and get away. I need a vacation!

Brooklyn Half marathon 2009 - The Long Version

Let me first say, this was my first half marathon ever, and this was also the longest I had ever run. (My longest training run was 10 miles, one week before the half) Let me also say, that the 2:26:21 minutes that it took me to finish was the quickest 2:26:21 of my life. I cannot believe that the run is over! It's already a past memory!!

Let me also say, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to Michelle, Kenneth, Ted, Jessica, my mother, Lydia, and everyone else who wished me good luck, and told me I could do it and believed in me, even when I wasn't sure that I believed in myself. What I accomplished today makes me teary eyed.

I slept poorly last night, and in fact, my alarm never even went off. (Thanks a lot iPhone) but, I managed to wake up at 5:30am, had my Luna bar, some water and went off my way to meet up with Michelle and Ted. There were some dramas along the way (no money for a Metro Card....15 minute line to use the most disgusting porta-potty EVA!) but nothing major, and the race ended up starting late, anyway. We cut in to the corrals (oops!) so we started about 5 minutes after the horn went off.

We were off!! I'm really doing this!!

For the first mile I was having some sort of weird shin/calf tightness that seems to literally only happen when I run in Prospect Park. Usually when I stop and stretch it out, I'm okay, but I kept running, because sometimes it goes away on it's own. By mile 2, it was gone. Okay, so mile 2....where's the water? It's warm, I'm thirsty, where's my water!!
Finally, as we're approaching mile 3, there is a loud surge of cheers...the elite runners are running their second lap (mile 5) in the park.....jesus..FINALLY 2.75 miles in Gatorade and water!! At mile 4 I lost Michelle and Ted at the water station, and the rest of the race I ran solo.

I felt exceptionally strong in the park, which gave my great confidence that I was going to finish the race, and I was going to beat my goal of sub 2:30, and I was right on track for my other goal 2:24. Got a great surge of energy at 6.5 - 7 as we were leaving the park. There was pretty good fan support in the park, and other then that first water station, I think they were all spaced pretty well.

I don't know what happened around mile 8 - 9, but i started feeling pretty fatigued. I knew I was more than half way done, (only 6 miles left! only 5 miles left! I kept trying to remind myself) but I was tired. I think at the 8 mile water stop I forced myself to gag through half an orange GU. (Have I told you how much I despise those retched things?!?!) There were misting stations at mile 8 and 10 which were FABULOUS! I was worried that I would get wet and it would make me all blistery, but the ice cold water felt sooooo goooooooood!

By mile 10 I had felt less fatigued, though my legs were starting to feel sore. I remember stopping to walk some point at mile 11 and I guy said to me, "It's only two more miles! You can do it!" And I knew I could. So close. We were passing Kings Highway! Avenue U! The water stations were chaotic, but organized somehow. The volunteers were dipping cups into large lined garbage bins of Gatorade. (Or in addition they filled up a pitcher and you'd just serve yourself)

By mile 12, I was feeling almost euphoric. So little left!! DON'T STOP SAMANTHA!!!!! At this point, I did kind of want to get this over with, but in a good way. My legs were still feeling stiff, but no pain. Coming towards the Q train over pass on W Brighton was totally overwhelming. There were a lot of people there cheering, and I could hear people cheering ahead, and there tears that started to well up my eyes. I tried to calm down, because I could feel my throat starting to tighten and I needed every last ounce of air I could get into my lungs.

I did not run up the ramp to the boardwalk. You must be crazy. No effin way. I walked up the ramp, took a deep breath, and tried as hard as I could to "power" through that last half mile. And it was not easy, that last half mile was probably the toughest half mile of the entire race. When they tell you "Only 1/4 mile left!!!" it's no consolation, because you see the finish line up ahead and want it to be done, NOW!!

Overall, I really enjoyed the race, and I think NYRR did a pretty good job organizing it. It was no where near as crowded as I thought it was going to be. Of course I was happy to end at Coney Island, with it being home, but it was so nice to get those hills out of the way in the beginning, I'm not sure how I would have felt about the race had it been backwards.

Right now, my calves are soooooreeee. I also have one blister on my toe, which hurts a little, and I'm a little sun burned on my shoulders. In a few days all that will face, and all I will remember is number 10119, the good times I had on this day, and the great people I met today.

Excitement and nerves

A million and one thoughts are floating through my mind. My nerves are not getting the best of me, but I am excited, anxious, everything.

Doot doot dooooo

Still no registration for the Brooklyn Half, which is killing me. As it is now, I don't know if I can run it, I'm afraid they'll move it up a few weeks and then there's NO way I'll be able to run it. At least the Philly Half Marathon is Sept 20, so I should be able to do that ;)

My money's on the bear

Depends if the fight was in water or on land. At least a bear has a shot in water. Not so tough now, Jaws!

NYRR, running, there's more to life?

I ran in the NYRR 8000 this Saturday, and after not running for nearly a week, I spent the rest of the weekend recouping. Don't get me wrong, it was a great race, and I had a lot of fun, and I made it in a respectable time as well (51:45!) The problem is, all I can think about is, "What's next?"

I am now officially a member of the New York Road Runners. This will make me happy when it's time to sign up for the Brooklyn Half marathon, because the dues will be much less then it will be for non member. There's a 10k in the middle of April, which will probably be my next race (hey, it starts at 10am!!!) assuming that the knee gets better and better, not worse and worse. It is feeling better though, funny enough since I ran on Saturday. I'm going to be light on it, and wait until Wednesday to run again, with the brace. Seeing a sports doctor is probably in my near future.

That's pretty much what I feel like is consuming me. Running, trying to fit life into running and going to the gym. I feel like there aren't enough minutes in the day to do everything I need to do.

Sunday, March 8, 2009

This is definitely a calm, quiet Sunday. I did a "long run" earlier, which was about .4 shorter then I wanted to go, but since me and my running ladies were running by time, usually 40;00 is adequate. It wasn't really a good run for me, but I can blame that on some other things. I am really really excited for Saturday, but at the same time I can't wait for it to be over with :p

I have a lot of aspirations for things to do this summer. Go biking more, go swimming a few times, run in different parks etc. etc, it's always nice to have these kind of hopes, but all of these things are physically demanding, and I don't want to disappoint myself. It would also be really, really nice to go on a real vacation this year, but I don't think money will allow it. We'll see, it's only March! God, it's March already!!

Dean...Karnaxes? Oh! Marathons!! Are you running in a marathon?!?!

The guy at the library was easily over 60, but he seemed so excited to hear that I was taking out a book about running a marathon. He had mentioned that he had run four of them in his life, many years ago. He asked me if I ever planned on running on. "Some day," I said. 'I'm building up to it." He told me it was the best thing he's ever done, and that you only need to do one (not four! which I thought was funny to add) and people will just be amazed.

I felt like he was rooting for me. And after the day/week I've had, it felt nice to get rid of some of that stress for a little bit and take a nice brisk walk back to the office.

Situation Normal...

I feel like the last three weeks have been crazy. I had an amazing four day birthday weekend, and then promptly Tuesday morning all of it went back to shit again. I am desperately waiting for this weekend so I can go running, take a long hot shower, and then just curl up in bed and watch a movie with Kenneth.

My head is squished in a vice. I just need some r&r.

Tuesday Cat Hates Tuesdays

There are parts of me (mainly, my left calf muscle) that are still sore from Saturdays 5k. LAMMMMEeeee. The pictures from Brightroom aren't up yet, which is terrible for an impatient person like myself. Oh well. I need to get back to WORKING, but I just felt like I needed to share a little bit of my soreness with all of you.

5k Al Gordon Snow Flake Run

So, today was my very first "race" It was a simple 5k in Prospect Park. (where I'd never run before) I was definitely out of the breath by the last half mile, and that last hill suuuckkkkeedddd.

Thank you to everyone who wished me good luck, and told me they were proud of me, it meant a lot. Most importantly, I am proud of myself. I did something today that I could have made a million excuses to not do. I finished in 32:10, which is something I am happy about. I'm looking forward to running more this year, and, running faster :)

Saturday, February 14, 2009

I am about two minutes to write this entry before I need to go take the Turkey Meatballs out of the oven. There is no way that I can do that.

I woke up at 8:30 this morning, on my own, feeling refreshed, so I was afraid to fall back asleep and wake up at 10 and feel like shit. I've gotten a lot done today (ran almost 3miles OUTDOORS, knitted some more in a baby blanket (present!) made Spinach-Ricotta Gnocchi, made turkey meatballs...umm..ate sushi...!) and I am now exhausted. I want to curl up in bed with my bear and watch a movie. Maybe I'll flip through his giant DVD book and pick some Japanese horror movie and break out the Godiva that my boss bought me for V-DAY. The funny part is when I cook so much it kind of kills my appetite. I am thinking about doing laundry briefly, but, it might kill me.

I am trying to figure out my gym/running/yoga schedule for next week, and I have no idea what I'm doing when. THEORETICALLY.
Sun - Gym, Monday - Bikram or Run outside, Tues - Run or Bikram, Wed - Pilates @ OMALA if I can get out of work on time, Thurs - Run? Rest? Relax? depends on work Fri - Bikram or Rest, Sat - 5k in Prospect Park....as long as it's not FRIGGIN SNOWING. Ugh. Please be 40 and sunny on Saturday...

Totally unrelated, I haven't gotten that many comments on the hair, which makes me think that most people do not like it, but honestly, it's a huge change for me, and I love it.

NY Brooklyn Half Marathon

Okay, so this is like a little bug burrowing it's way into my head, because every time I run, I think about this. Who am I kidding, I am training for this.

I looked up last years course map (http://www.nyrr.org/races/2008/pdf/bklyn_half_map.pdf) and it makes me laugh. Start out by running on the Boardwalk, and up Ocean Parkway. Really? Do you know how comfortable I would be? Maybe I shouldn't say that. But do you know how comforting it would be to start a race there? It's HOME!

Oh, and also I'm an idiot and can't do time related math. After looking at the race results from 2008, my "goal" time would be 02:11:00, (10 minute mile aka 6 miles per hour) NOT 01:30:00 (which would a 6:52 minute mile...)

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Saturday

I could not think of a good title for this post. I ran 5 miles at the gym today, which is the longest I've run....in a long time. Ever maybe. I did not run anywhere near a speed that would be considered "fast."

I had something else to write in here, that was not about running, but I don't even remember what it is. I bought a new scale on Amazon. I bought yarn to start knitting a baby blanket. (no, not for me) I have been stressed. I have been sad. Slowly it is all starting to slip away (the stress and the sadness, that is) and I can almost see the light. I love my iPhone.

I cannot wait until the weather warms up. LET ME SAY THIS AGAIN.

I cannot wait until the weather warms up. I want to run outside, bike, go to the beach, swim, eat outdoors, take walks, take real photographs.

Resolutions and Inspirations

I read a blog post on the website runnersworld.com

IMPOSSIBLE THINGS
One of my all-time favorite quotes is from Lewis Carroll's classic, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland:
(Alice) "There is no use trying; one can't believe impossible things."
(Queen) "I dare say you haven't had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
Now that we've all made our New Year's resolutions, it's time to go beyond and reach for the impossible.  Sometimes referred to in business as a "stretch goal," what's the one thing you've always dreamed of accomplishing, though never thought possible?
(cut) So there you have my impossible thing.  Now, let's hear about yours! Share with us the one thing you've always dreamed of, but never thought there was much use in trying.  Dare boldly; the sky's no longer the limit (it's laying on the pavement anyway, so reaching beyond it shouldn't be too difficult).
Okay, out with those impossibilities!

So, what's yours? Mine is simple, and not really impossible. Run the Brooklyn Half-Marathon in May. in 1:30:00 (which may be hard though not impossible) It's that simple!

Text?

I haven't really written anything in here in a while, huh? The world is standing still. Ken is working in GA for the next two weeks and I am still here. When he's not here I feel like I exist in my own little bubble. I go to work, the gym, rinse repeat.

My scale is broken and I am not really wanting to get a new one so quickly.
